Sealing Cartons

Whether you want to use secure your products for business to business or business to customer shipping, you may find it the most appropriate option to use corrugated cartons for product packaging. The most concerning matter in this regard is to make sure that you have sealed the cartons properly. The arrival of poorly sealed cartons can be a cause of turnoff for the recipient.

The most opted way of sealing cartons around the world is the use of plastic pressure-sensitive tapes (PSTs). This tape, however, sometimes fails to ensure maximum packaging efficiency. The use of PSTs can result in a higher risk of compromised packaging safety, as anyone can press the box a bit to slip a hand into it. Using a strip of the tape can easily hide the attempt of tampering. Packers generally have to use more PST to get the required seal, which contributes to higher packaging costs.

The right way to seal corrugated cartons

According to several test results and experiences, gummed tape, also known as water-activated tape, has been a more appropriate option for sealing corrugated boxes. These tapes consist of Kraft paper and stretch-based adhesive. The strength of these tapes can be enhanced by reinforcing them with crossing synthetic fibers. Activating the adhesive with water makes it capable of penetrating into the carton material, forming a more secure and permanent seal. The use of this tape eliminates the chances of intrusion significantly, as any attempt of tamper becomes more traceable.

No matter what the external conditions are, the water-activated tape can maintain its seal on the corrugated surface. This tape has been more efficient and effective compared to the plastic pressure-sensitive tape in this regard.

Does it mean that plastic pressure-sensitive tapes are outdated?

PSTs are by no means outdated. There are so many applications where plastic pressure-sensitive tape remains the best sealing option. If your carton has to go through less harsh or more secure conditions, using the plastic tape may be in your best interest. For instance, you may want to use plastic tape when you are sure that your packages will remain palletized until they reach the delivery personnel. Or, you may want to keep using this tape if you are sure about the safety of the shipping procedure.

The matter of fact is that other tapes are also available to help you with many packaging applications. You may want to discuss with your packaging supplier about the best option you can consider. However, you may find the water-activated tape the best option for carton sealing.

In the end, it ultimately depends on what you are packaging. With so many types of packing tapes available, it might become easy for you to get confused while making a selection. The best way is to learn about the packaging materials you are using. Then, you can research the type of packing tape that you might find helpful. Based on this knowledge, you can pick the most appropriate packing tape to seal your cartons.
